Hastings is the commercial centre of Western Port. It’s High Street provides shopping opportunities within major outlets as well as cafes, professional services and speciality stores.
The foreshore provides access to the harbour jetty, tracks for walking and cycling, picnics, playgrounds and the Visitor Information Centre.
The Heritage listed Warringine Wetlands 3.5km walking trail connects Hastings with Jack’s Beach along a boardwalk and gravel track through mangroves with views to French Island and the tiny Sandstone Island just offshore. Western Port is home to some of the most southerly growing mangroves in the world. If you are fortunate, you may see some of the Swamp Harriers that nest in the area in Spring.
The town was established in the 1850s as a fishing and farming community. The Visitor Information Centre is housed in the former home of the Fisherman’s Cooperative on the Hastings Jetty dating from the same time. The industrial development of the late 20th century is still visible in the fuel storage facilities and steel cold rolling mill facilities, which are still operating.
